A Latex Mattress Can Help You Go Green

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Nowadays, there is so much emphasis on going “green” and returning to more natural ways of living.  I’ll admit, it’s important to me too, and I buy organic produce and meats, prefer real sugar to sweeteners, and dress in all natural fibers like cotton and wool.  We don’t use chemical cleaners in our home in favor of vinegar and citrus, and we’re looking into purchasing a hybrid vehicle.  Usually, all this natural stuff can be significantly more expensive than the traditional man-made items.  Do you need to spend $5,000 on a specially made organic mattress?  Not when you can get a great latex mattress for less than you think.

Organic BedsWhether it’s an allergy issue, product sensitivities, or you just like the idea of knowing what is in your home and on your body, the next step to purifying your life might just be your mattress.  It can be hard (and ridiculously expensive) to go out and find an all organic mattress (and they might not be too comfortable either).  While we don’t have an all cotton or all wool mattress, we do have choices that can be healthier for the environment, as well as healthier for you.  Check it out:

  • We have a variety of latex mattresses from Nature’s Way and King Koil Contour Response.  These mattresses have no coils, they have a base foam instead, with layers of latex atop that base foam to add support and comfort.
  • Within the King Koil Contour Response Collection, the Opulent and the Essence are all latex.  They have a 7″ Dunlop (man-made) latex core, with Talalay (natural, as in Latex Mattressfrom the tree) latex padding layers.  The Glorious, Harmonious, and Lavish have the same Dunlop core and Talalay padding, but they also have memory foam padding layers also, which is a man-made polyurethane foam.
  • Some of our mattresses, such as the Renaissance Euro Box Top, have bamboo covers.  Bamboo is soft, resilient, breathable, and renewable.
  • If you don’t mind man-made, but don’t want all the toxic chemicals, Comforpedic may be your brand.  Their entire line-up of memory foam beds are CertiPUR-US certified, which indicates that there are no toxic or questionable materials within their mattresses.  They are also great because they last for so long (they have 25-year warranties), you won’t have to replace (and throw out) the mattress for almost twice as long as a regular bed.
  • Concerned about polyurethane foams?  There may be some off-gassing, it’s just part of the process.  However, King Koil’s Everlast foam (which is in almost all of their beds) is 58{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} soy based, so it’s a more natural polyurethane than is offered by other brands.

There are many options to try to rid your life of unhealthy chemicals and processes, and more are coming out every day.  We will keep you updated as we get new “green” beds in.

Do Your Homework Before Selecting Your Mattress

There are hundreds of manufacturers of beds out there, and literally thousands of models to choose from.  How are you supposed to find the one that’s right for you, at the right price?  It’s like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Make it easier on yourself by doing your homework.

What I mean by this is that you don’t have to go in blind and uninformed.

You can do a ton of research on the internet, and eliminate at least three quarters of the choices out there.  What research?  I don’t know, go to legitimate review websites like www.sleeplikethedead.com, read my blogs, go to manufacturer’s websites, check out some products online.  The only thing that I don’t recommend doing is reading random customer reviews, because they are always negative, and don’t accurately portray the pros and cons of the beds.

Do Your Homework Before Selecting Your Mattress

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  1. How do you and your partner sleep?  On your back, side, stomach?  Back and stomach sleepers need a firmer feel, so no pillow tops or euro tops.  Side sleepers need something softer, so no extra firm or luxury firms.  Do you both sleep differently, and can’t agree on a feel?  Check out memory foam.  Also note that some brands cater to different sleeping styles – for example, Beautyrest Recharge is great for side sleepers because of the individually pocketed coil system.
  2. How long do you realistically want this bed to last?  Do you really want to go out and shop again in four years?  Or do you want ten to fifteen out of it?  This correlates directly to the quality of the bed, and really, how much you pay for it.  Don’t expect a $200, or even a $500 mattress to last for ten years.  It’s just not going to happen.
  3. What is your budget?  Don’t say as cheap as possible, because this is an important purchase that you’ll have for a long time, and it will affect your health.  That being said, get a number in your head that you’re aiming for.  Tell this to the salesperson, so they don’t waste time introducing beds that are either above or below your price range.
  4. Do you sleep hot or cold?  Memory foam beds may be warmer, softer beds sleep warmer than firmer beds do.
  5. Do you have back problems?  Some beds offer extra back support, like King Koil mattresses.  Also, memory foam and latex are great for people with back pain, arthritis, etc.

    Selecting Your Mattress

When you call in to the online retailer, or walk into the store, don’t expect the salesperson to read your mind.  Outline to them exactly what you’re looking for, and improve your chances of coming out with the right bed for you!

Comforpedic Models Explained

The new Comforpedic line-up has been out for a few months now, and we’ve heard nothing but good reviews from customers.  In case you still haven’t purchased yours, here are some details on each bed, so you can choose which is right for you!  We’ll start with the most basic, and move on from there:

Comforpedic Balanced Days

  1. Comforpedic Advanced Rest – This is the firmest of all of the new Comforpedic beds.  It is 9.5” in height, and can take regular sheets.  This bed starts with 1” of AirCool Memory Foam with TruTemp gel.  This layer is basically open cell memory foam, with gel globules suspended throughout the foam.  The gel absorbs excess heat, and then releases it when the sleeper moves.  This new technology allows 2.8 times quicker heat dissipation than other brands.  The AirCool memory foam cradles the body and relieves pressure to give the sleeper natural spinal alignment.  This is followed by firm comfort foam, which is what gives this bed it’s firmness, and then another 2” of AirCool memory foam.  The core of this bed, like all Comforpedic mattresses, is made of 2” Independent Support Technology, which is a foam layer that has sculpted cushions to react individually to the support and pressure relief needs of your body.  This layer also promotes air flow throughout the mattress.  The core also contains a 3.5” AirCool Transflexion Core, which provides ventilated support for both the comfort foams, and the sleeper.  The edge support on the Advanced Rest is ventilated on all sides for improved air flow.  The Advanced Rest is best for back and stomach sleepers, side sleepers might want a softer, more conforming feel.Comforpedic Mattresses
  2. Comforpedic Renewed Energy – This plush firm feeling memory foam bed is 11.5” thick, and ideal for all types of sleepers.  It has the same 1” AirCool Memory Foam with TruTemp Gel as the Advanced Rest, but underneath that layer it has an additional 1.5” of 1.65lb AirCool Memory Foam.  This is what gives this mattress that softer feel.  The rest of the layers are identical until you reach the Transflexion Core, which on the Renewed Energy is 5” thick instead of 3.5”.
  3. Comforpedic Balanced Days – This plush mattress is the most popular of all the Comforpedic models, and is 12.5” thick.  Again, the layers are very similar between the Balanced Days and the Renewed Energy, the only difference being that second layer of comfort foams.  Instead of the 1.5” of 1.65lb AirCool memory foam, there is 1.5” of 4.5lb Advanced AirCool Memory Foam, which gives a softer, more conforming feel.  The Balanced Days is perfect for all types of sleepers, and is very popular for use on adjustable beds.Comforpedic Restored Spirits
  4. Comforpedic Restored Spirits – This mattress is the top of this new Comforpedic line-up, and has an ultra-plush feel.  This mattress is suitable for side and back sleepers, but may be too soft for stomach sleepers.  The Restored Spirits is 13” thick, and has higher density memory foam than all other Comforpedics.  The top layer is the same for all models, but then this mattress has 1.5” of 5.5lb Advanced AirCool Memory Foam, followed by 2.5” of the same 5.5lb foam.  This is what provides that super soft feel while maintaining support. The AirCool Transflexion Core is 6” on this mattress, providing support and pressure relief.

All of these Comforpedic mattresses are approved for use on adjustable bases, and all have a twenty-five year warranty.  Find out which one is best for you, and sleep well tonight!

Comforpedic vs. Tempurpedic – Why Consider Comforpedic?

A Battle for the Ages: Tempurpedic or Comforpedic for your Memory Foam Mattress?

It wasn’t that long ago that there were really only two options when choosing a Memory Foam mattress- Tempurpedic or the “other guy”.  For a full decade, Tempurpedic dominated the mattress scene much like Tiger Woods on the golf course.  No other company was able to create a feel and story that was compelling enough to turn the heads of consumers and sales professionals alike.

But recently, Simmons Beautyrest has re-launched the Comforpedic collection, and many consumers have started to take notice.

So how do these products compare? Which one is right for you?

affil_bbbBetter Business Bureau

Both Tempurpedic and Simmons Comforpedic are rated an A+ on the BBB web site.  This means that they are members of the BBB and are usually excellent at handling complaints until both parties are satisfied.  It DOES NOT mean that they never get complaints.

ODOR

images (2)Almost all products that use foam as a component will ship with some degree of odor or off gassing.  Most products manufactured in the US are required to meet a bevy of laws regarding chemicals and their use, and since Tempurpedic and Comforpedic are made in the US of US made components, both are relatively safe for use.  One consumer site called sleeplikethedead.com rates Comforpedic significantly better with odor than Tempurpedic, based on consumer complaints, with Comforpedic receiving a C + rating and Tempurpedic receiving a D +.  Also, Comforpedic is rated as a Certipur-US® Certified manufacturer, meaning it uses only materials that are independently verified as safe for your body and the environment.

Ratings

best_mattress_reviewsTempurpedic advertises that over 90{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} of Tempurpedic users are satisfied with their purchase, which seems impressive.  But on sleeplikethedead.com, the rating is closer to 81{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} satisfaction.  At 81{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a}, Tempurpedic is still one of the highest rated brands. Comforpedic, however, is rated at an 84{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} approval and is the 2nd highest rated brand.  The biggest drawback for both products seems to be price point and weight.  Tempurpedic’s new Simplicity™ line starts their collection below $1500 for a queen mattress, but does not include any real memory foam and only has a 10 yr warranty.  Comforpedic’s collection starts around the same price point, but uses a full 1.5” sheet of memory foam and has a 25 yr limited warranty, making Comforpedic a better value proposition.

Sleep: You Just Might Be Doing It Wrong

Sleeping positionsIf you’ve been reading my blogs, you’ll notice that I recommend softer beds for side sleepers, medium beds for back sleepers, and medium firm beds for stomach sleepers.  I say this because most of the time, these average firmness levels help keep the sleeper’s spine in alignment.  But sometimes, folks, it’s not the bed.  It’s possible that you’re just sleeping wrong (position-wise).  Check out this info graphic about sleeping positions.  If you have arthritis, did you know that sleeping in the fetal position can be making it worse?  Or that acid reflux is increased in stomach sleepers?  If you’re concerned about wrinkles, try your best to sleep on your back, as all other positions will increase the pull on your skin.

According to the graphic, everyone should be sleeping on their back.  It reduces wrinkles and acid reflux, and can help prevent back and neck pain.  And, if snoring isn’t a problem, then this might be the just right position for you.  If it’s not comfortable, try putting a pillow under your knees, to elevate your legs slightly, this will ease the pressure on your lower back.  For a mattress, try the Bernardsville Plush Pillow Top by Beautyrest Recharge.  It’s that just right combination of firm support, and soft padding that’s not overwhelming.

Most of us sleep on our sides, because it just tends to be the most comfortable.  While the graphic says that it’s not so great for wrinkle free skin and perky breasts, that’s why they created plastic surgery, right?  Side sleepers don’t snore, and usually have less acid reflux.  And true, it is the requisite sleeping position for expectant mothers (how else are they supposed to sleep without smashing up their insides, and still being able to breathe?!?).  To open up your hips, place a poufy pillow between your knees to make your spinal position better.  Try the Comforpedic Balanced Days, which is really pressure relieving since most of your weight will be on your hip and shoulder, and will offer great support.

Does anyone over the age of five still sleep in the fetal position?  By pulling your legs up towards your chest, you are pushing your hip further into the mattress, which creates pressure points.  Your back is curved, which ends up being painful, and believe me, no pregnant lady is sleeping with her knees smashed up against her belly.  If this is the ONLY way that you can sleep, try putting a pillow between your knees to help with the hip problem, or find a bed that’s more comfortable for different positions, like the Comforpedic Renewed Energy.  I’d bet that you’d be able to train your body to sleep a different way on a more supportive and comfortable bed.

sleeping positions

Finally, stomach sleepers.  I never really understood them.  I once tried to sleep on my stomach, and couldn’t do it.  My neck and back hurt, I didn’t know where to put my arms, and I was being suffocated by the pillow.  It’s my personal opinion that these people sleep this way because they are resting on a bed that is too firm, and is creating pressure when they sleep on their sides, and isn’t adequately supporting their lumbar region when they are on their back.  If the bed isn’t providing cushioning, you might as well use your own natural softness, right?  The problem is that it’s a vicious cycle – stomach sleepers need to sleep on something firm, which means that the chances of them changing their sleep position are slim, because it’s just not going to be as comfortable as sleeping on their stomach.  If you sleep on your stomach and don’t have neck and back pain, then you belong in the circus.  However, if you’re a die-hard tummy fan, then get a Recharge Dennet Luxury Firm.  It’s firm enough to keep you breathing, but not too firm that it would be uncomfortable if you decided to make a position change for the better.  To ease your lumbar pain that you’re surely having, you can try to put a pillow under your hips, to relieve some of the pressure on your lumbar.

As for me, I sleep mostly on my side, sometimes on my back.  My husband sleeps on his back, until I shove him onto his side to stem the snoring.  Any way that you go, make sure that you choose a new mattress that will fit the way that you sleep.  And if you go into a store to shop, make sure that you try out that test bed in the way that you actually sleep.  Just a tip.

Top 5 Reviews on Comforpedic Mattresses in 2013

Since the new 2013 Comforpedic beds are still only a few months old, it’s difficult to find reviews for them online.  Sure, we found a ton of reviews on last year’s beds, but since much has changed, it’s not really that helpful.  At DrSnooze, we’ve been encouraging all of our Comforpedic customers to go online and post a review, good or bad.  We’ve been getting a ton more good than bad though!  Here’s the five most useful:

1. Regarding the Advanced Rest:

“firm and supportive” Review by Cheryl  – 4-Stars

“I was looking for a firmer memory foam bed – I don’t like to sink in, and this was perfect.  Much firmer and more comfortable than other brands.”

This review is a great testimony for AirCool Memory Foam.  Not only is it cooler than other brands, but it’s not as “sinky”.  The Advanced Rest is really very firm, and while it conforms well, it’s easier to move around on and get off of than other brands.

2. Regarding the Renewed Energy:

“good for adjustable bed” Review by Paul – 5-Stars

“We bought this to be used with adjustable beds, and they’re perfect.  No complaints.”

The Renewed Energy is our most popular model for use on adjustable bases.  All of the Comforpedic models are approved for use on adjustables, because they bend and flex so well without breaking down.

3. Regarding the Renewed Energy:

“a satisfied customer” Review by John B. – 5-Stars

“I was shopping for a mattress for over two months, after a lot of research I can truly say I made the right decision.  It’s everything I expected, definitely helps with my back pain.”

Comforpedic Models

Memory foam is proven to reduce pressure points, decrease tossing and turning, and can be very beneficial for those with back problems.  When comparing Comforpedic mattresses to other brands, many customers are finding that Comforpedic is the one to buy, due to the price, the quality, the pressure relief, and the AirCool system.

4. Regarding the Balanced Days:

“much better than Tempurpedic” Review by Hot Flash Mary – 5-Stars

“We had a Tempurpedic, and ended up returning it because I was so hot on it, with my hot flashes.  We bought this one because we need a memory foam because my husband has bad back problems and it’s working really well.  I’m not as hot and his back feels better.”

Again, another lover of the AirCool System.  No one else has combined breathable foam, air channels, ventilated edge support, mesh borders, and gel all in one bed.  There is no memory foam bed that’s cooler.

5. Regarding the Balanced Days:

“Considering the price” Review by Amy P. – 4-Stars

“this bed is very comfortable.  I am 5’4 110lbs and my husband is 6’3 and he is very comfortable.  My only regret we should have gone with a king.”

The Comforpedic beds respond to each person differently.  This means that couples (like Amy P. and her husband) who are different sizes, shapes, and weights, can both be comfortable on the same mattress.  She’s probably also appreciating the lack of motion disturbance too!

There are so many different features and benefits of Comforpedic beds, and they fit the bill for so many different people with different needs and problems.  These new beds are getting glowing reviews from customers and sales people alike, and are worth consideration when you’re mattress shopping!

4 of the Best Comforpedic Loft Models to look for during a Mattress Sale in Ocala, Florida!

Comforpedic Loft Models to look for during a Mattress Sale in Ocala, FloridaSo you have done a little bit of research (or maybe you are doing it right now), and the brand that you are looking for is Comforpedic Loft by Beautyrest.  There are at least 8 models on the market today, and simply choosing between those models can be difficult at best.  If you are like most people, you will wait until they go on sale and buy the one that is the best feel at the lowest price.

All Comforpedic models include the AirCool® DesignSales can be great, but use them to get the RIGHT model at the lowest price, not one that you think will be serviceable and just “OK” for you.

All Comforpedic models include the AirCool® Design- a complete system designed to combine Memory Foam, support foams, edge support, and fabric to make one complete system that is both breathable and easy to move around on.

I usually advise customers to think about their sleeping position to figure out which model might be best for them.  Sleep position is the position you are in when you first fall asleep, not the position you are in when you wake up.  That is the position your brain says is the most comfortable for your body.  Here are reviews of the 4 most popular Comforpedic models:

4 most popular Comforpedic models

Johnstown Luxury Firm

Typically a good bed for someone who is a stomach sleeper, the Johnstown has 1.5” of Memory Foam and a firm support structure to prevent your body from sagging in the middle third.  The Johnstown is also good for someone who prefers a firmer feel but wants just a little bit of softness.  Compare to the Dreamy Sky™.

Northville Plush

A great bed for customers who prefer to fall asleep on their back (or a good compromise bed for couples who cannot decide which feel is best), the Northville features two layers of Memory Foam to provide a more buoyant sleep system.  It is still relatively firm, but has much more comfort than the Johnstown.  Still good for stomach sleepers as well.  Compare to the Sparkling Stars™.

Lewis City Deluxe Plush

A good bed for shoulder or hip pain in the side sleeping position, the Lewis City Deluxe also features GelTouch™ Gel infused Memory Foam to help you sleep a little cooler.  This bed is a superb value, as a full 40{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} of the mattress is either Memory foam or Gel Memory Foam.  It is comparable to another bed called the Evening Star™.

Hamburg Luxury Plush

The best bed in the Comforpedic line for side sleepers, the Hamburg Luxury Plush is the real WOW bed in the line.  If you find this on sale, and you are looking for the best option available, jump on the opportunity.  It features the most memory foam and gel in the line, but still has a solid feel and is relatively easy to move around on.  Compare to the Bright Nights™.

Memory Foams – Stop Complaining, and Take a Second Look at Memory Foam

We live in a world of ever changing technology, and the mattress industry is no stranger to innovation.  Fifteen years ago, no one had heard of memory foam, and now they are in every store, and account for a significant percentage of new mattress sales.  Like with everything that is new, there is a lot of conflicting information out there, regarding how they feel, react, perform, and support.  However, there are some companies who are staying ahead of the curve, and who have addressed these concerns and fixed many of the issues that were originally reported.

Complaint #1: Memory foam beds sleep hot.

While early memory foam was closed cell and could be warm, many steps have been made since then to make memory foam beds more breathable.  For example, consider the AirCool system in Comforpedic mattresses.  This system includes ventilated foam, gel infused memory foam layers, ventilated edge support, and mesh side fabric.  The AirCool system is proven to dissipate heat up to 2.8 times faster than the competition, and is the most innovative memory foam cooling system currently on the market.

Complaint #1: Memory foam beds sleep hot.Complaint #2: Memory foam feels like quicksand, and I never stop sinking!

While to an extent this is the nature of the beast, many companies are coming out with their own signature blends of the foam, and making strides to make it a quicker reaction experience.  Comforpedic mattresses have this feature, due to their innovative AirCool memory foam blend, which is quicker reaction, while maintaining the density, durability, and support.

Complaint #3: They are too hard to move around on.

While this is true, the statistics say that you change position in memory foam about 80{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} less than in traditional innerspring mattresses.  This is due to increased circulation, provided by pressure relieving memory foam cushioning hips, shoulders, and backs.  The idea behind a memory foam bed is that you sleep more “in” the bed, rather than “on top”.  Due to this, the complaints will remain about difficulty moving, because that is what the mattresses are designed to do.  Furthermore, as technology moves along, and manufacturers keep innovating, they will probably address this issue as well.

Regardless of the strides that bedding manufacturers have made, innerspring mattresses are still the most popular selling mattresses.  And while there will always be a market for the innerspring mattress, there are a few reasons why memory foam beds are worth a second look.

Second Look #1: Memory foam beds offer superior support.

They hug the body, and respond to heat and weight, keeping your spine in its most natural position.  Memory foam beds are also better at relieving pressure, and can even relieve pain (according to webMD ).  This is because there are no metal coils creating pressure points, memory foam beds even out the pressure over your entire body, maintaining your circulation, and reducing aches and pains.  Dr. Breus states (on webMD)”If you have a hard time getting comfortable, if you have chronic fatigue, or some type of muscle pain, then a memory foam mattress would work well for you”.

Second Look #2: Memory foam lasts much longer than innerspring mattresses.

For example, Comforpedic mattresses have a twenty-five year warranty on them, and perform better in durability tests than innerspring beds.

why memory foam beds are worth a second look.

Second Look #3: Memory foam keeps you sleeping undisturbed.

Memory foam is also better for motion separation, so partners don’t disturb each other, and they are ideal for adjustable base use.

Mattress selection is a very personal decision, which is why some beds are perfect for some people, but not good for others.  Overall, memory foam beds stand up next to any other type of mattress, and hold their own, especially since so many innovations have been made, as seen in Comforpedic mattresses.  They are no longer warm, some are quicker reaction, and they are easier to move around on than previous memory foam models.  Memory foam has been proven to relieve pressure points, give superior support, and has great motion separation between partners.  A memory foam bed will never feel like an innerspring, and an innerspring will have a hard time matching the support, pressure relief, and durability of memory foam. Memory foam may not be for everyone, but they are worth your consideration the next time that you’re shopping for a new mattress.

Check out the infographic by ZEO, and read why you really need to pay attention to your sleep.  It affects everything from cancer to weight gain, and can have drastic effects on your health.  Face it, no one is getting the amount or quality of sleep that we need, and it’s getting harder and harder to fit the needed eight hours into our schedules.  Why not make the sleep you get count more?  Toss and turn less, increase circulation, relieve pressure points, support your back, wake up refreshed.  Comforpedic mattresses do all of this with their AirCool memory foam, which is soft and firm, comfortable and supportive.

   2. Because you should plan for the future.

Yeah, your IRA and 401K are great, but what about your health?  As you get older, your needs are going to change.  Your body is going to change.  You will probably have aches and pains, possibly some arthritis, god forbid anything worse than that.  If you already have a Comforpedic mattress, you’re ahead of the game.  They will help with all those ailments that appear when you age, and will keep you more comfortable for longer.  Also, they have twenty-five year warranties.  Do the math, and find out how old you’ll be in twenty-five years…you’ll need something that’s pressure relieving and supportive, believe me.

3. Because you deserve the best technology.

You keep on the cutting edge of technology when it comes to your phone, your laptop or tablet, your tv, your car.  Why are you sleeping on the mattress technology of fifty years ago?  Newer is better, right?  Comforpedic mattresses have the AirCool Sleep System, which is a combination of ventilated edge support, AirCool memory foam, mesh side walls, and TruTemp gel that keeps you cool and comfortable all night long.  Their exclusive AirCool memory foam is quicker to react than other memory foams, and feels both soft and supportive at the same time. Comforpedic mattresses have the latest in technology and innovation, to keep you on the cutting edge of, well, sleep.

Regardless of why you choose Comforpedic mattresses, be it to perform better at work, plan for your arthritic future, or because you always need the best of the best, they won’t let you down.
