Do Your Homework Before Selecting Your Mattress

There are hundreds of manufacturers of beds out there, and literally thousands of models to choose from.  How are you supposed to find the one that’s right for you, at the right price?  It’s like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Make it easier on yourself by doing your homework.

What I mean by this is that you don’t have to go in blind and uninformed.

You can do a ton of research on the internet, and eliminate at least three quarters of the choices out there.  What research?  I don’t know, go to legitimate review websites like www.sleeplikethedead.com, read my blogs, go to manufacturer’s websites, check out some products online.  The only thing that I don’t recommend doing is reading random customer reviews, because they are always negative, and don’t accurately portray the pros and cons of the beds.

Do Your Homework Before Selecting Your Mattress

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  1. How do you and your partner sleep?  On your back, side, stomach?  Back and stomach sleepers need a firmer feel, so no pillow tops or euro tops.  Side sleepers need something softer, so no extra firm or luxury firms.  Do you both sleep differently, and can’t agree on a feel?  Check out memory foam.  Also note that some brands cater to different sleeping styles – for example, Beautyrest Recharge is great for side sleepers because of the individually pocketed coil system.
  2. How long do you realistically want this bed to last?  Do you really want to go out and shop again in four years?  Or do you want ten to fifteen out of it?  This correlates directly to the quality of the bed, and really, how much you pay for it.  Don’t expect a $200, or even a $500 mattress to last for ten years.  It’s just not going to happen.
  3. What is your budget?  Don’t say as cheap as possible, because this is an important purchase that you’ll have for a long time, and it will affect your health.  That being said, get a number in your head that you’re aiming for.  Tell this to the salesperson, so they don’t waste time introducing beds that are either above or below your price range.
  4. Do you sleep hot or cold?  Memory foam beds may be warmer, softer beds sleep warmer than firmer beds do.
  5. Do you have back problems?  Some beds offer extra back support, like King Koil mattresses.  Also, memory foam and latex are great for people with back pain, arthritis, etc.

    Selecting Your Mattress

When you call in to the online retailer, or walk into the store, don’t expect the salesperson to read your mind.  Outline to them exactly what you’re looking for, and improve your chances of coming out with the right bed for you!

T_Do_Allergies_Cause_Asthma_1When it comes to allergies, there are many situations and exposures that are out of your control.  Thankfully, your mattress doesn’t need to be one of them.

whosinyour
Any traditional innerspring mattress is a haven for thousands of tiny dust mites.  According to Environment, Health, and Safety Online, while these dust mites themselves are not dangerous, toxic, or parasitic, their excrement is.  There is a protein in dust mite poop that is highly allergenic, and is what people are allergic to when they are allergic to “dust”.  Additionally, materials in traditional mattresses can trap and hold allergens, such as pollen and pet dander.  For those of us who suffer from allergies and asthma, just going to bed can become a dreaded experience of medication, tissues, and sneezing.

Memory foam mattresses, also known as “visco-elastic” mattresses, are a great alternative to the traditional innerspring beds.  According to an article by Kurt Hardesty on Amazines.com, due to the way that memory foam is composed, it is not penetrable by dust mites.  Basically, dust mites cannot live in memory foam.  Additionally, many memory foam beds have removable covers, which trap pollen, dander, and those dust mites directly on the cover, to be washed out in your washing machine.  If you have a high quality memory foam bed, such as Comforpedic, you may want to put a mattress protector over the existing cover, to further protect the mattress, as well as your health.

In addition to dust mites, pollen, and pet dander allergies, Comforpedic mattresses have no natural allergens in them, such as down or latex, to irritate the sleeper.  They are also resistant to mold, mildew, and bacteria.  Comforpedic mattresses are the most hypoallergenic mattress available.

Another option to consider when trying eliminating allergens in bedding is your pillow.  Using a down or fiber pillow may be exacerbating your condition.  These materials are attractive to dust mites, since they are next to your skin, and provide the warm, humid environment that they prefer.  Think about changing out your regular pillows for memory foam pillows.  In addition to being dust mite resistant, Kurt Hardesty comments that they don’t get lumpy or ball up, they maintain their shape, loft, and support.

If you suffer from allergies or asthma, changing your bedding to Comforpedic memory foam may be a solution to better, sneeze free sleeping.

Are Comforpedic Mattresses Good for Sex?

Comforpedic Mattresses Good for Sex? For many couples out searching for a new mattress, they are not only testing the sleeping comfort of the bed, but also evaluating the suitability of the bed for sex.  Most sleep doctors recommend that you only use your bed for two things: sleep and sex, so it makes sense that carnal activities should factor into the equation.  Instead of embarrassing yourself at the mattress store, or guessing when purchasing a mattress online, we recommend relying on www.sleeplikethedead.com, the best unbiased mattress review and ratings site, to lead the way.  They have gathered information from 370 people, regarding their experiences with their own mattresses, and have compiled them into a comprehensive ratings list.  Here are their findings on general memory foam mattresses:

  • Active Sex Friendly – D+

This rating rates how easy the bed is to move around on, and change positions.  Memory foam on the whole gets a D+, mainly due to the participant sinking into the mattress, and the slow reaction of the foam.

  • Bouncy – F

Suffice to say, memory foam mattresses aren’t going to help you along at all.

purchasing a mattress online

  • Allows Discretion – A

This grade means that memory foam is excellent at keeping your private activities private.  The mattress is quiet, and absorbs the energy being exerted on top of it.

  • Durable – B

Memory foam is excellent at not showing the wear and tear of frequent use, both sleeping and otherwise.  It maintains its support and comfort.

  • Allows Many Positions – C

This category refers to the possibility of different comfortable positions on the bed.

While memory foam does relieve all pressure, it is difficult to move on, giving it the average grade.

  • 2005_2_16_bedroom bedford (8)Comfortable – B+

Memory foam mattresses allow a position to be kept for a long time without pain or discomfort.  This is due to the pressure relieving properties of the foam.

  • Allows Faster Climax – B

This may, or may not be a benefit!  This category is grading the mattress’ ability to provide “traction” for the participant.  The idea behind this is that this “traction” decreased the amount of energy being used for the movement, and can result in quicker climax, without all the cardio.

  • Whole Bed Suitable – A-

This is an overall grade of worthiness.  Not a bad grade for memory foam!

The above ratings are for memory foam as a whole, but Comforpedic is different from regular memory foam.  Their AirCool memory foam formula reacts and recovers quicker than regular memory foam does, making it easier to move and change positions on.  Due to this, Comforpedic gets better marks from www.sleeplikethedead.com than other memory foam brands that are not as quick to react.

Another aspect to consider is which Comforpedic you are interested in.  Commons sense would dictate that the softer the mattress, the deeper that you will sink into it and the harder it will be to move.  Additionally, if partners are of drastically different weights, the heavier person will sink in further, and things may not line up as they should.  If this is the case for you, or you are concerned about exerting too much energy trying to move, a firmer Comforpedic might be ideal for you.

Which ever Comforpedic mattress you choose, know that you can be comfortable and supported while sleeping, and it won’t hamper your sex life!

Comforpedic Models Explained

The new Comforpedic line-up has been out for a few months now, and we’ve heard nothing but good reviews from customers.  In case you still haven’t purchased yours, here are some details on each bed, so you can choose which is right for you!  We’ll start with the most basic, and move on from there:

Comforpedic Balanced Days

  1. Comforpedic Advanced Rest – This is the firmest of all of the new Comforpedic beds.  It is 9.5” in height, and can take regular sheets.  This bed starts with 1” of AirCool Memory Foam with TruTemp gel.  This layer is basically open cell memory foam, with gel globules suspended throughout the foam.  The gel absorbs excess heat, and then releases it when the sleeper moves.  This new technology allows 2.8 times quicker heat dissipation than other brands.  The AirCool memory foam cradles the body and relieves pressure to give the sleeper natural spinal alignment.  This is followed by firm comfort foam, which is what gives this bed it’s firmness, and then another 2” of AirCool memory foam.  The core of this bed, like all Comforpedic mattresses, is made of 2” Independent Support Technology, which is a foam layer that has sculpted cushions to react individually to the support and pressure relief needs of your body.  This layer also promotes air flow throughout the mattress.  The core also contains a 3.5” AirCool Transflexion Core, which provides ventilated support for both the comfort foams, and the sleeper.  The edge support on the Advanced Rest is ventilated on all sides for improved air flow.  The Advanced Rest is best for back and stomach sleepers, side sleepers might want a softer, more conforming feel.Comforpedic Mattresses
  2. Comforpedic Renewed Energy – This plush firm feeling memory foam bed is 11.5” thick, and ideal for all types of sleepers.  It has the same 1” AirCool Memory Foam with TruTemp Gel as the Advanced Rest, but underneath that layer it has an additional 1.5” of 1.65lb AirCool Memory Foam.  This is what gives this mattress that softer feel.  The rest of the layers are identical until you reach the Transflexion Core, which on the Renewed Energy is 5” thick instead of 3.5”.
  3. Comforpedic Balanced Days – This plush mattress is the most popular of all the Comforpedic models, and is 12.5” thick.  Again, the layers are very similar between the Balanced Days and the Renewed Energy, the only difference being that second layer of comfort foams.  Instead of the 1.5” of 1.65lb AirCool memory foam, there is 1.5” of 4.5lb Advanced AirCool Memory Foam, which gives a softer, more conforming feel.  The Balanced Days is perfect for all types of sleepers, and is very popular for use on adjustable beds.Comforpedic Restored Spirits
  4. Comforpedic Restored Spirits – This mattress is the top of this new Comforpedic line-up, and has an ultra-plush feel.  This mattress is suitable for side and back sleepers, but may be too soft for stomach sleepers.  The Restored Spirits is 13” thick, and has higher density memory foam than all other Comforpedics.  The top layer is the same for all models, but then this mattress has 1.5” of 5.5lb Advanced AirCool Memory Foam, followed by 2.5” of the same 5.5lb foam.  This is what provides that super soft feel while maintaining support. The AirCool Transflexion Core is 6” on this mattress, providing support and pressure relief.

All of these Comforpedic mattresses are approved for use on adjustable bases, and all have a twenty-five year warranty.  Find out which one is best for you, and sleep well tonight!

Comforpedic vs. Tempurpedic – Why Consider Comforpedic?

A Battle for the Ages: Tempurpedic or Comforpedic for your Memory Foam Mattress?

It wasn’t that long ago that there were really only two options when choosing a Memory Foam mattress- Tempurpedic or the “other guy”.  For a full decade, Tempurpedic dominated the mattress scene much like Tiger Woods on the golf course.  No other company was able to create a feel and story that was compelling enough to turn the heads of consumers and sales professionals alike.

But recently, Simmons Beautyrest has re-launched the Comforpedic collection, and many consumers have started to take notice.

So how do these products compare? Which one is right for you?

affil_bbbBetter Business Bureau

Both Tempurpedic and Simmons Comforpedic are rated an A+ on the BBB web site.  This means that they are members of the BBB and are usually excellent at handling complaints until both parties are satisfied.  It DOES NOT mean that they never get complaints.

ODOR

images (2)Almost all products that use foam as a component will ship with some degree of odor or off gassing.  Most products manufactured in the US are required to meet a bevy of laws regarding chemicals and their use, and since Tempurpedic and Comforpedic are made in the US of US made components, both are relatively safe for use.  One consumer site called sleeplikethedead.com rates Comforpedic significantly better with odor than Tempurpedic, based on consumer complaints, with Comforpedic receiving a C + rating and Tempurpedic receiving a D +.  Also, Comforpedic is rated as a Certipur-US® Certified manufacturer, meaning it uses only materials that are independently verified as safe for your body and the environment.

Ratings

best_mattress_reviewsTempurpedic advertises that over 90{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} of Tempurpedic users are satisfied with their purchase, which seems impressive.  But on sleeplikethedead.com, the rating is closer to 81{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} satisfaction.  At 81{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a}, Tempurpedic is still one of the highest rated brands. Comforpedic, however, is rated at an 84{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} approval and is the 2nd highest rated brand.  The biggest drawback for both products seems to be price point and weight.  Tempurpedic’s new Simplicity™ line starts their collection below $1500 for a queen mattress, but does not include any real memory foam and only has a 10 yr warranty.  Comforpedic’s collection starts around the same price point, but uses a full 1.5” sheet of memory foam and has a 25 yr limited warranty, making Comforpedic a better value proposition.

Sleep Facts – Moms sleeps almost 20{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} LESS than Dads!

As we age, we need less and less sleep to be able to function normally.  According to the National Sleep Foundation, newborns need the most, up to eighteen hours per day.  Infants from three to eleven months need about fourteen to fifteen hours, toddlers need twelve to fourteen.  Skip ahead to children up to age ten, and they still need ten to eleven hours.  Teens need at least eight, up to nine, and adults need between seven and nine hours.

For kids and teens, they need this larger quantity of sleep for a few reasons: first they are growing.  Children do the most growing at night, while they are asleep.  It’s also the time when muscles repair themselves, and cells regenerate.  Secondly, the mind processes all the learning that was done during the day at night.  Not getting enough sleep can affect short term memory, which in turn can affect test scores and school performance.  Those late night cramming sessions may not be as beneficial as we all thought that they were!  Thirdly, have you been around a kid that hasn’t gotten enough sleep?  Protect your own sanity, and make sure that your kids are getting the sleep that they need.

Not getting enough sleep

Now, adults.  Those of us who don’t sleep enough have a higher risk of diabetes, obesity, heart problems, and depression.  There is an increased risk of getting into an accident, both in the car and at work, and a decreased ability to pay attention and remember things.

We live in a society that seems to reward lack of sleep.  In my home, it seems like no one ever sleeps well, and we are always trying to one-up each other about who slept less.  It seems to me that you are looked down upon if you sleep too much (which may only be eight hours), and you’re considered to be lazy and less productive.

It may be that there is too much stimulation, too many things to do and check up on.  Most of us are working more than 40 hours per week, sometimes from home.  We need to catch up with our kids, our housework, our email, Facebook, and twitter.  I know that in my home, I often don’t get a moment to myself until my kids are in bed and asleep, and this can sometimes be as late as 10pm.  Although I’m tired, I still want to respond to an email, enjoy the peace and quiet, or watch a movie with my husband.  I feel like I’ve earned that relaxation time, and am willing to forgo sleep to be able to wind down.  Check out this infographic, it’s the story of my life:

Moms sleeps almost 20{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a} LESS than Dad’s

This blog is great at telling you what you should be getting, but is all this information going to change your sleeping habits in the real world?  Probably not.  So, instead of telling you what your body needs, I’m going to tell you how to make the most of what you’re already getting:

  • Buy a new bed if you need to, one that supports you well and relieves pressure.  Pick one that dampens motion disturbance, and is a large enough size (like a king for two people).  My blanket recommendation, regardless of how you sleep and what size and age you are is the Renewed Energy by Comforpedic.  I know, I’m predictable.
  • For that “me” time at the end of the night, turn off the TV, the laptop, and the cell phone.  Pick up a book, or take a bath.  These activities can help you fall asleep easier and faster, rather than keep you awake.
  • Try to change your kid’s sleep timers.  If they have trouble getting up in the morning (or sleeping until noon on the weekends), put them to bed earlier at night.  This can be hard with teens, but have them keep a sleep journal, detailing (honestly) how much they slept, how easy it was to get up, and how they felt during the day.  If your toddler gets cranky in the afternoon, re-introduce the nap, or move up bed time.
  • Stay away from sugary snacks in the evening, even that bowl of ice cream.  For both kids and adults, it can keep you awake longer than you want to be.

Don’t be afraid to ask your partner to help you get a better night’s sleep, chances are that they’re sleep deprived too.  It’s for your health, your longevity, and your attitude.

Sleep: You Just Might Be Doing It Wrong

Sleeping positionsIf you’ve been reading my blogs, you’ll notice that I recommend softer beds for side sleepers, medium beds for back sleepers, and medium firm beds for stomach sleepers.  I say this because most of the time, these average firmness levels help keep the sleeper’s spine in alignment.  But sometimes, folks, it’s not the bed.  It’s possible that you’re just sleeping wrong (position-wise).  Check out this info graphic about sleeping positions.  If you have arthritis, did you know that sleeping in the fetal position can be making it worse?  Or that acid reflux is increased in stomach sleepers?  If you’re concerned about wrinkles, try your best to sleep on your back, as all other positions will increase the pull on your skin.

According to the graphic, everyone should be sleeping on their back.  It reduces wrinkles and acid reflux, and can help prevent back and neck pain.  And, if snoring isn’t a problem, then this might be the just right position for you.  If it’s not comfortable, try putting a pillow under your knees, to elevate your legs slightly, this will ease the pressure on your lower back.  For a mattress, try the Bernardsville Plush Pillow Top by Beautyrest Recharge.  It’s that just right combination of firm support, and soft padding that’s not overwhelming.

Most of us sleep on our sides, because it just tends to be the most comfortable.  While the graphic says that it’s not so great for wrinkle free skin and perky breasts, that’s why they created plastic surgery, right?  Side sleepers don’t snore, and usually have less acid reflux.  And true, it is the requisite sleeping position for expectant mothers (how else are they supposed to sleep without smashing up their insides, and still being able to breathe?!?).  To open up your hips, place a poufy pillow between your knees to make your spinal position better.  Try the Comforpedic Balanced Days, which is really pressure relieving since most of your weight will be on your hip and shoulder, and will offer great support.

Does anyone over the age of five still sleep in the fetal position?  By pulling your legs up towards your chest, you are pushing your hip further into the mattress, which creates pressure points.  Your back is curved, which ends up being painful, and believe me, no pregnant lady is sleeping with her knees smashed up against her belly.  If this is the ONLY way that you can sleep, try putting a pillow between your knees to help with the hip problem, or find a bed that’s more comfortable for different positions, like the Comforpedic Renewed Energy.  I’d bet that you’d be able to train your body to sleep a different way on a more supportive and comfortable bed.

sleeping positions

Finally, stomach sleepers.  I never really understood them.  I once tried to sleep on my stomach, and couldn’t do it.  My neck and back hurt, I didn’t know where to put my arms, and I was being suffocated by the pillow.  It’s my personal opinion that these people sleep this way because they are resting on a bed that is too firm, and is creating pressure when they sleep on their sides, and isn’t adequately supporting their lumbar region when they are on their back.  If the bed isn’t providing cushioning, you might as well use your own natural softness, right?  The problem is that it’s a vicious cycle – stomach sleepers need to sleep on something firm, which means that the chances of them changing their sleep position are slim, because it’s just not going to be as comfortable as sleeping on their stomach.  If you sleep on your stomach and don’t have neck and back pain, then you belong in the circus.  However, if you’re a die-hard tummy fan, then get a Recharge Dennet Luxury Firm.  It’s firm enough to keep you breathing, but not too firm that it would be uncomfortable if you decided to make a position change for the better.  To ease your lumbar pain that you’re surely having, you can try to put a pillow under your hips, to relieve some of the pressure on your lumbar.

As for me, I sleep mostly on my side, sometimes on my back.  My husband sleeps on his back, until I shove him onto his side to stem the snoring.  Any way that you go, make sure that you choose a new mattress that will fit the way that you sleep.  And if you go into a store to shop, make sure that you try out that test bed in the way that you actually sleep.  Just a tip.

How Comforpedic Mattresses Help with Motion Separation

top complaints of couples is motion disturbance on mattress while sleepingOne of the top complaints of couples is motion disturbance.  There’s nothing worse than being woken up because your partner is changing position, or tossing and turning.  There is no reason why both people need to be awake all night!

comforpedic mattress DrsnoozeUp until about ten years ago, there were only two options to solve this problem: separate beds, or a mattress with individually wrapped coils.  Few people want to sleep in separate beds, so that leaves mattresses with increased motion separating coil systems.  We’ve all seen the bowling ball commercial by Beautyrest ( click here to view the Video) , and these beds were truly revolutionary.  They worked much better than regular mattresses, but the results were far from perfect: padding and quilting still moved and pulled from side to side, and foundations were known to move and flex when someone was tossing and turning.

Thankfully, now there is an even better option that really dampens motion: memory foam beds.  That major brand’s commercial with the wine glass and the jumping person is now famous, and that level of motion separation really exists with these beds.  Here’s why:

  1. Memory foam reacts only to what is touching it, meaning that each person is only affecting the memory foam that is directly under them.  Since there are no coils or quick reaction foams connecting one side of the bed to the other, motion is not transferred from person to person.
  2. The act of tossing and turning is reduced by up to 80{d066f20f781a5b527d275b31e1f8758c7870657f3e5775941a299b25a4f5af5a}.  People move around on beds to find a more comfortable position, or to even out pressure points.  Since memory foam eliminates those pressure points and cradles the body evenly, almost any position is comfortable, and the urge to move because of excess pressure isn’t felt.Memory Foam Offer from DrSnooze
  3. The final reason why people move, especially on memory foam beds, is because they are hot.  While this may continue on some brands, others have addressed this issue and have made their mattresses cooler.  One of these brands is Comforpedic, who made their mattresses dissipate heat 2.8 times faster than the competition by inventing the AirCool Sleep system, which is a combination of open cell foams, gel infused foams, and ventilated edge support and side material.

With Comforpedic, you truly get the best of all worlds: undisturbed sleep, and a cool and comfortable environment.  Partners don’t feel the need to move around as much as on a traditional mattress, and when they do have to move, they don’t transfer the motion to the other side of the bed and disturb their partner.  For those people who are very sensitive to movement, are very light sleepers, or just want to get a better night’s sleep, a Comforpedic may just fit their bill.

Top 5 Reviews on Comforpedic Mattresses in 2013

Since the new 2013 Comforpedic beds are still only a few months old, it’s difficult to find reviews for them online.  Sure, we found a ton of reviews on last year’s beds, but since much has changed, it’s not really that helpful.  At DrSnooze, we’ve been encouraging all of our Comforpedic customers to go online and post a review, good or bad.  We’ve been getting a ton more good than bad though!  Here’s the five most useful:

1. Regarding the Advanced Rest:

“firm and supportive” Review by Cheryl  – 4-Stars

“I was looking for a firmer memory foam bed – I don’t like to sink in, and this was perfect.  Much firmer and more comfortable than other brands.”

This review is a great testimony for AirCool Memory Foam.  Not only is it cooler than other brands, but it’s not as “sinky”.  The Advanced Rest is really very firm, and while it conforms well, it’s easier to move around on and get off of than other brands.

2. Regarding the Renewed Energy:

“good for adjustable bed” Review by Paul – 5-Stars

“We bought this to be used with adjustable beds, and they’re perfect.  No complaints.”

The Renewed Energy is our most popular model for use on adjustable bases.  All of the Comforpedic models are approved for use on adjustables, because they bend and flex so well without breaking down.

3. Regarding the Renewed Energy:

“a satisfied customer” Review by John B. – 5-Stars

“I was shopping for a mattress for over two months, after a lot of research I can truly say I made the right decision.  It’s everything I expected, definitely helps with my back pain.”

Comforpedic Models

Memory foam is proven to reduce pressure points, decrease tossing and turning, and can be very beneficial for those with back problems.  When comparing Comforpedic mattresses to other brands, many customers are finding that Comforpedic is the one to buy, due to the price, the quality, the pressure relief, and the AirCool system.

4. Regarding the Balanced Days:

“much better than Tempurpedic” Review by Hot Flash Mary – 5-Stars

“We had a Tempurpedic, and ended up returning it because I was so hot on it, with my hot flashes.  We bought this one because we need a memory foam because my husband has bad back problems and it’s working really well.  I’m not as hot and his back feels better.”

Again, another lover of the AirCool System.  No one else has combined breathable foam, air channels, ventilated edge support, mesh borders, and gel all in one bed.  There is no memory foam bed that’s cooler.

5. Regarding the Balanced Days:

“Considering the price” Review by Amy P. – 4-Stars

“this bed is very comfortable.  I am 5’4 110lbs and my husband is 6’3 and he is very comfortable.  My only regret we should have gone with a king.”

The Comforpedic beds respond to each person differently.  This means that couples (like Amy P. and her husband) who are different sizes, shapes, and weights, can both be comfortable on the same mattress.  She’s probably also appreciating the lack of motion disturbance too!

There are so many different features and benefits of Comforpedic beds, and they fit the bill for so many different people with different needs and problems.  These new beds are getting glowing reviews from customers and sales people alike, and are worth consideration when you’re mattress shopping!

The general consensus amongst the public is that mattress manufacturers and retail salespeople make things up at will, to bring sales their way.  True or not, sometimes things are made up that can actually benefit you.  I’m talking about the “plush-firm” by Beautyrest and BeautySleep.  Simmons came up with this new feel to further refine their beds and make them easier to choose and buy.  That’s right, easier.  Who knew!?!

Plush Firm - Beautyrest and BeautySleepIt’s frustrating when you go to a mattress store, or shop online, and there are a bunch of different comfort level descriptions and arbitrary scales that don’t really tell you much.  For many brands, there is just a firm, a plush, and a pillow top.  But what does that really tell
you about the feel of the bed?  Nothing.  Other brands have expanded to include feels such as luxury firm, cushion firm, ultra plush, etc., but what does this tell you?  Nothing.  This is because most manufacturers change the feel of the mattress by changing the padding; they use firmer padding, or add more cushion, depending on the comfort profile that they are trying to achieve.

But not Beautyrest.

Beautyrest actually changes the coil system.  They use a firmer coil system for their plush-firm beds, and a softer coil system for their plush beds.  In fact, there is no difference between the padding for the plush-firm and plush models, just the coil difference.  Why is this important?

For many years, Beautyrests were known as very firm mattresses, due to their durable, firm, and supportive coil systems.  However, this feel was not always pleasing to those who liked a softer bed, without feeling the firmer coils underneath.  Beautyrest found a way to keep their coil systems supportive, while providing that softer feel.  Enter the softer coil system in the plush version mattresses.  But what about those who liked the firmer feel of the coils?  We’ll just call it plush firm, since it’s a plush top over a firm coil, and call it a day.  Brilliant!

So instead of going with a manufacturer who just changes their padding to make the bed softer or firmer, check out a brand that actually changes the whole support of the bed to give you the feel that you want.  This is also true with their plush-firm pillow tops, euro tops, and box tops.  All the way up the line, the plush-firm beds have a firmer coil, while the plush beds have a softer coil.

FYI, BeautySleep, while they don’t change the actual coil, does have beds with a plush-firm feel; it’s the Anthem and the Remix, for those on a budget, who still want that great in between feel.
